Tailored Curriculum

TCDoverchildandmothersewingTeach Your Young Child To Sew Program

Many parents would like to teach their young children (5-9 years old) to sew but do not know where to begin.  After a great deal of research, I have developed a program that teaches children the same hand-sewing fundamentals that high end fashion seamstresses rely upon in a fun and age-appropriate manner. Ideal for home-schoolers but created for everyone who wants to instill a love of sewing in their children, this program offers weekly lessons sent to parents via email with each lesson building upon previous lessons.

Testimonial: There is no better woman than Dr. Julie-Ann to offer something educational and fun, as well as helping adults create a wonderful opportunity for connecting with a child.~~Maggie Butler, MSW, and The Celtic Muse Creativity Coach, Dublin, Ireland and Maine, U.S.

Lessons include:

Year 1

  • Introduction to basic sewing tools and how to use them safely
  • Age appropriate mastery of needle skills
  • Age appropriate mastery of ten sewing stitches
  • Creating button-holes and other fasteners

Year 2

  • Understanding textiles
  • Age appropriate mastery of embroidery stitches
  • Creating different types of seams
  • And more!

I have used the word “curriculum” on purpose.  Many “how to sew” books just teach one or two stitches associated with creating a cute project.  Unfortunately, these projects do not provide long-term understanding of sewing fundamentals.  Much like teaching a child to read or calculate, Tailored Curriculum enables children to develop an understanding of the sewing process using fun, easy to complete, projects that build their confidence with each new skill learned.

Testimonial: My daughter and I found the “Tailored Curriculum” to be fabulous!  We are learning to sew together because Julie-Ann created lessons that are practical, fun, and easy to follow.  Thanks Julie-Ann!~~Kelly J. Eveleth, NV,

Building upon my  over 15 years of experience teaching people how to teach, Tailored Curriculum provides detailed lesson plans that enable parents to teach their young child how to sew–even those parents that don’t know how to sew!  Whenever possible, the lessons also include “life skill” conversation ideas and educational standards extensions.

Testimonial: Dr. Julie-Ann McFann’s “Tailored Curriculum” is a program that is geared toward both the student and the teacher.  Whether you are just a beginner or have several years of sewing experience the content is easy to understand and the directions are simple to follow. The lessons are focused towards child engagement as well as easy to understand step-by-step instruction.  I could focus on the fact the Dr. McFann has years of sewing experience as well as knowledge as an educator, but I won’t.  “Tailored Curriculum” is perfect for people who are not comfortable with sewing and lack the necessary skills to create projects.  I am impressed with the program because it is easy to understand and is explained in a detailed easy to understand manner.  You don’t need to be a sewing master to comprehend the “what” and “how to” in order to complete the projects.   From an educator’s perspective, the “Tailored Curriculum” reaches across the disciplines and meets Educational Standards. I highly recommend this program~~Jan C., 5/6 Grade and  GATE Teacher, Santa Clarita, California
