Purple Heart

I’m feeling better after being knocked down and dragged out by my sinuses.  They are still letting me know they are there but at least I’m functioning better today than I have been since last week and am ready to continue discussing the Pantone Institute’s Fall 2009 Fashion Color Report.

Okay, maybe it’s the sinus thing making me grumpy, but I have to say this: I think it is entirely inappropriate to use the term “purple heart” to describe a fashion color.  The Purple Heart is given to members of the United States Military who have been wounded or killed while serving.  To me, to appropriate it for use as a fashion color just seems to trivialize the sacrifice men and women have made.

Stepping off the soapbox, now. DuBarry2266Pantone says that “Purple Heart” connotes a sense of refinement and sensuality, adding an air of creativity and excitement to the top 10 [colors], especially when paired with “American Beauty.” Like “American Beauty,” “Purple Heart” is a rich jewel-town color that would be ideal as a print in a vintage inspired dress (perhaps with the color muted just a bit) such as this DuBarry’s dress from Out of the Ashes Collectibles.

Searching Vogue Fabric’s website using the keyword “purple,” I found three pages of hits.  Here are a few of them.

This first one, a calico-inspired polyester print would be perfect for a vintage-inspired dress like the DuBarry, above.

I am picturing this Kona cotton made up as a tailored shirt that could be worn under a grey wool jumper for a professional look.

This polyester charmeuse would be perfect for a softer looking blouse (under that grey wool jumper).

For your own searches on your favorite internet fabric sites, you can use keywords such as purple, eggplant, and plum.

Next time, we explore “Honey Yellow.”

  • I agree with you on the “purple heart”
As far as the colors, I think “warm olive” is a hair off the mark. I think the biggest color for this year is warm olive only much brighter. I see it everywhere. On products to clothes to paint jobs on auto transmission businesses that change their paint every 6 months so people notice them.
