I Feel Giddy!

nataliewoodI spent Saturday obsessing about my classes.  I tried registering early, but the system wouldn’t let me in (proving that “they” meant it when they wrote “you cannot register early” in red on the sign in page).  At 10:00 on the dot on Sunday, I was able to log-in and register.  Much to my delight, I was able to register for the two classes that I needed/wanted: Fashion Survey and Beginning Textiles.  I got the last seat in both classes.

Hurray!!!  I have been doing a happy dance singing (to the tune of “I Feel Pretty”) “I feel giddy, oh so giddy, oh so giddy and …” well that’s where it stops because I can’t think of words to fill in with the tune and then I start over again.  But the point is that the last time I was in a sewing class, I was 13 year old and just the act of registering for these classes  has touched something deep within me.  I feel like a long-dormant part of myself is being liberated and it makes me giddy with delight.

The Fashion Survey course consists of both lecture and lab during each class meeting.  Well, what would a lab for a fashion course consist of?  Sewing, of course!  So, every Monday afternoon, I will be working on samples and projects for the class.  Based on old handouts that I found on the web, I will probably be required to make a tote bag, a skirt, and a dress for the projects.  Looking at the assignments, I know that my skills will be stretched (which, of course, is what I want) even though the course description says we will learn basic level sewing skills.

My sister, Jan, jokingly wanted to know if it was cheating that I take this class because it is right up my alley.  My friend Suzanne laughed and said it was called “good fit.”

There was always some reason why I couldn’t take sewing classes, either at the college or at the local fabric store.  Now all of the reasons have been eliminated and I finally get to further develop my skills under the watchful eye of a professional.

Pretty soon, I will be the professional teaching others the joy of sewing, too!
