Thursday Theatrics: Hand Stitching ~ Back Stitch

If, like me, you need someone to actually show you how to do things, then you’ll appreciate this fashion designer taking the time to demonstrate very basic hand stitches.

Continuing on in the series, today’s stitch is the back stitch. Truthfully, I don’t think I’ve ever used a back stitch. It doesn’t mean that there weren’t instructions to use a back stitch, I’m just saying that I don’t ever remember using it and it probably because I never learned how. I can see how it would be a very strong and stable stitch. I’ll have to use it–now that I know how to do it, that is!

  • I did a lot of hand-sewing growing up. (My aunt taught me so I could make doll clothes.) I was taught to do the running stitch for seams. But I have used the backstitch on my own clothes occasionally, and it is a much stronger stitch. It is stronger than a sewing-machine stitch, IMO.
