Thursday Theatrics (a day late): Sewing Posture

As I was looking for a sewing-related video, I was horrified by the posture of this young fashion designer as she sews. Anyone who sews for any length of time, knows that she is going to have major back problems.

Fortunately for us, Dr. R.L. Bates, a plastic surgeon who likes to quilt, describes the proper posture for sewing in her blog, Suture for a Living.

Almost 20 years ago, I “sprained” my left shoulder for the third time (the first was in a car accident). It took almost 2 years to completely heal. As a result (and because of the weight from having a large bosom), I am acutely aware of the importance of proper sewing posture. After the sprain, I was only able to sit at the machine for 10-15 minutes at a time before the pain would become too intense. Since I never want to endure that kind of pain again, I’ve always made sure that I do exercises to ensure a strong back. The Machine Quilting Tips and Techniques website offers some exercises to relieve machine sewing stress and fatigue.

Remember, proper sewing posture ensures that you will enjoy pain free sewing!
